Synopsis
Blue Sky Studios nominated for Best Character in an Animated Feature by the Visual Effects Society
White Plains, NY On January 19th the Visual Effects Society announced their 2005, 4th annual Nominations for Excellence in Visual Effects work from film, television commercials and games. Blue Sky Studios was honored with a nomination for Best Character in an Animated Feature for Fender in Robots, the nod going to Robin Williams, Dave Torres, Mark Piretti and Ben Williams.
The exceptional performance for Fender was recognized in the iconic tribute sequence Singin in the Oil. This evening Fender leaves the woman of his dreams breaking into celebratory song and dance, inspired by Gene Kelly in Singin in the Rain. The original concept by a Blue Sky story artist called for Fender lightly skipping and dancing down the streets in Robot City, it was only when Robin Williams saw the story boards during a recording session did he begin to ad-lib the words that now make up Singin in the Oil.
To bring Fenders physical performance up to the level of Williams lyrics, they animators studied the foot work of Gene Kelly, choreographed his dance moves, filmed themselves out side the studio dancing down stairs to achieve the correct balance in movement. Then, approximately 200 discreet moves and more than 2000 key able attributes were manipulated to pose Fender in each lyrical pose.
Once you watch the sequence, youll understand why Fender is the best animated character out there . Enjoy!
