Blue Sky Studios To Bring Childrens Book Horton Hears a Who To The Big Screen
Posted : March 3, 2005
LOS ANGELES, CA, March 3rd, 2005 - After a two year courtship, Twentieth Century Fox announced today that its animation unit, Blue Sky Studios (ICE AGE, ROBOTS) will team up with Audrey Geisel, widow of Ted Geisel, to bring the lovable childrens book Horton Hears a Who to the big screen as a 3D-CG animated feature slated for 2007.
President of Fox Animation, Chris Meledandri set his sights on Horton based on the books narrative structure. The three distinct acts of Horton will allow for great flexibility adapting the tale into an 80 minute feature. Once Geisel decided to bring Horton to the big screen, several other animation studios entered the running. Through three pivotal scenes in the book, Blue Skys Head of Modeling Mike DeFeo created three special sculptures, in accompaniment was a painting of the beloved elephant and a sample animation test.
Audrey Geisel is most concerned with preserving and respecting the message that Ted created in his books, Blue Sky sealed the deal by allowing her to serve as executive producer and certain creative approvals. Audrey Geisel has allowed two other works to be adapted to live-action films, but this venture with Blue Sky will be the first 3D-CG adaptation.
Fox and Blue Sky have also acquired the rights to the second book in the Horton series, Horton Hatches an Egg, a director will be announced shortly and Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, who both worked on "The Santa Clause 2," will pen the screenplay
